The short video-sharing platform TikTok dethroned Google to become the most popular at the end of 2021, according to data released by Cloudflare, a web security and performance company. These two were followed by the domain names of tech giants Facebook, Microsoft, Apple, Amazon, Netflix, YouTube, Twitter, and WhatsApp.
It was a huge jump from 2020 when TikTok was far from Google. In 2020, Google remained in the lead, followed by Facebook and Microsoft. TikTok, however, was in 7th place. The Facebook-owned Instagram domain, which was in 9th place last year, has been removed from the top 10 list this year.
According to the Cloudflare report, TikTok first took first place for one day on February 17, 2021. In March, TikTok got a few more days and also in May, but it was after August 10, 2021 that TikTok took lead most days.
“There were days when Google was # 1, but October and November were mostly TikTok days, including Thanksgiving (November 25) and Black Friday (November 26),” the report adds.
Most popular domains (end) 2021
Notably, TikTok has been banned in India for security reasons.
The report states that the Facebook domain was steadily number 2 in 2020, but with the rise of TikTok, Facebook is now a solid number 3, followed by Microsoft (Office365 and Teams numbers included) and Apple.com (numbers App Store and Apple TV + are included).
It is said that since January 2021, Amazon has jumped ahead of Apple. But Apple is back in front, after September, with a few exceptions like November 28, 2021, the eve of Cyber Monday – and also December 1 and 6.
The report states that Netflix also overtook Amazon in December 2020, particularly around Christmas week. Some days around Christmas 2020, Netflix was even higher than Apple, in # 4, this is the case from December 23, 25 and from December 29 to January 2, 2021.
Social media domains also remained at the top of the Cloudflare rankings. The top nine social media apps were all on its list of the world’s top 100 most popular domains – the only one to come out is Quora.com (in 2021 it was between 687 and 242). Also on this list, TikTok tops the chart, followed by Facebook and YouTube.
