Jujutsu Kaisen reveals more new details about Domain Extensions as Yuta, Uro, and Ishigori all try to launch theirs at the same time in Chapter 179.
WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Jujutsu Kaisen Chapter 179 “Sendai Colony, Part 6”, by Gege Akutami, John Werry and Snir Aharon, available in English from Viz Media.
Jujutsu Kaisen Cursed techniques are some of the most complex and entertaining power systems in anime/manga. One of the best aspects of this particular system is the ability to use domain extension, considered the pinnacle of Jujutsu sorcery. This is not a common skill in Jujutsu society, although recent events in the Culling Game may lead fans to believe that it is.
Some of the most skilled wizards, like Kento Nanami, couldn’t reach this level of sorcery. The fact that the Culling game has already shown five different characters launching their domain expansions (or at least attempting to do so) further speaks to the power of these players. A wizard using his domain extension usually means victory, as his attacks hitting the target are guaranteed. However, not all realms work like this, as seen with Hiromi Higuruma’s Deadly Sentencing.
When two wizards launch their domain extensions in the same space, usually the stronger domain will overwhelm the weaker. The latter will eventually break and only the strongest will remain. Gojo Satoru proved it in his fight against Jogo. However, it gets a bit more complicated when it comes to Three Domains instead of just two.
In chapter 179 of Jujutsu Kaisen, Yuta, Uro, and Ishigori are all trying to launch their domain extensions at the same time – and none of them are going as planned. When the domains overlap, can’t-miss attacks actually cancel each other out. Moreover, as they attempt to erect their barriers, the internal and external conditions required differ for each. As if that didn’t make the situation difficult enough, an unexpected invader suddenly bursts in.
Kurourishi had apparently reproduced through parthenogenesis before Yuta killed him in Chapter 175. After the original’s exorcism, the cursed energy of fear across Japan was poured down on the child. Thus, a new Kurourushi – just as strong as the previous one – was created. His sudden invasion into the Domain’s conflicting barriers, combined with their differing conditions, causes all three barriers to break completely.
No new domain extensions were seen in chapter 179, but Jujutsu Kaisen readers still learned new details. Interestingly, this new information raises a question regarding the malicious Sukuna Sanctuary, which is unlike any other domain extension seen so far. It does not create a separate space using a relatively small barrier but rather covers a radius of almost 200 meters. What would happen if Sukuna’s domain extension collided with two others? It seems plausible to assume that his would easily overwhelm everyone else, but that remains to be seen as the manga continues.
