Flare, a new L1 blockchain compatible with Ethereum, marks a major partnership. It will establish itself as the technical basis of a new domain name system, an alternative to the centralized systems available.

dWeb Foundation Partners with Flare for a Truly Decentralized Web: Details

According to the official announcement shared by dWeb Foundation and To burst, the two organizations have signed a long-term strategic partnership. The launch of a revolutionary alternate domain level system is the main point of the new collaboration.

dWeb’s flagship peer-to-peer technology, Handshake Naming System (HNS), allows users to replace the existing centralized DNS state when 13 servers control the majority of the world’s Internet infrastructure.

Through this partnership, Flare will host a sub-level domain (SLD) naming system. It will anchor existing top-level domains (TLDs) to create domains such as .flare. Then the SLDs (e.g. searchengine.flare) will be connected to the TLDs through Flare’s State Connector.

Chjango Unchained, Executive Director of the dWeb Foundation, is fascinated by the incredible opportunities a new collaboration opens up for the internet, the Web3 sphere and both teams:

The domain name market is expected to grow to an industry of over $1 billion by 2027. The Handshake opens up the traditional TLD namespace by creating a permissionless process to add customizable TLDs to it. By building a Layer 2 infrastructure on top of Handshake’s Layer 1, decentralized SLDs can accelerate this growth trajectory and possibly exceed it by orders of magnitude.

Launch of the Handshake grant program

Hugo Philion, CEO and co-founder of Flare Network, points out that this partnership is set to change the narrative of Internet experience for millions of users around the world:

Flare is excited to partner with dWeb to provide smart contract functionality to Handshake’s decentralized internet technology. Flare’s role in hosting SLDs is a driving factor in this collaboration, realizing our vision of a peer-to-peer, immutable, and accessible Internet experience. We are happy to work alongside the dWeb team to advance this reality.

dWeb Foundation invites all developers interested in building on Handshake to join its grant program. Applicants will receive grants and advisory support.

As previously reported by U.Today, Flare is creating a framework to bring smart contracts to non-programmatic blockchains such as Litecoin, XRP Ledger, etc. Currently, its mechanisms are undergoing stress tests in a “sister chain” called Songbird (SGB).
