There is still prejudice in mortgage financing in the United States, notwithstanding the Equal Credit Opportunity Act (ECOA), which forbids it. These prejudices may have far-reaching consequences for housing equality and possibly contribute to expanding the racial wealth gap if they penetrate machine-learning algorithms employed by lenders to speed up decision-making.
In real-world situations, a model’s predictions will be off since it was trained on a biased dataset, such as one where more Black applicants were denied loans than white borrowers with the same income, credit score, etc. MIT researchers created a method for eliminating bias from the data used to train these machine-learning algorithms to counteract the development of prejudice in mortgage lending.
In contrast to existing strategies, the researchers’ method can reduce bias from a dataset that includes numerous sensitive qualities, such as race and ethnicity, and many “sensitive” choices for each attribute, such as Black or white, Hispanic or Latino, or non-Hispanic or Latino. Sensitive traits and preferences separate one group from the next.
A machine-learning classifier developed by the researchers, termed DualFair, successfully predicts whether a customer will be accepted for a mortgage loan. Their strategy significantly decreased prediction discrimination while retaining high accuracy when applied to mortgage loan data from numerous states in the United States.

In a mortgage loan dataset, DualFair addresses both label and selection bias. Label bias arises when the odds of success or failure favoring one group are disproportionately high at a greater rate than necessary (Black applicants are rejected loans). Selection bias arises when data are not representative of the more significant population. Residents in a particular area with a history of low incomes are the only ones included in this dataset.
For example, white men who are neither Hispanic nor Latino nor black and Hispanic women or Latino are subcategories of DualFair that help eliminate label bias.
As many subgroups of the dataset as feasible may be used to address discrimination based on several characteristics concurrently.

Duplicating minority group members and removing majority group members are used to balance the number of borrowers in each grouping. DualFair balances the percentage of loans accepted and rejected in each subgroup to equal the median in the original dataset before recombining the subgroups.
Iteratively checking each data point for the existence of prejudice is how DualFair reduces selection bias. For example, suppose a non-Hispanic or Latino Black woman gets turned down for a loan. In that case, the system will experiment with other combinations of her color, ethnicity, and gender to see if the result changes. When this borrower’s race is changed to white, DualFair eliminates that data point from the dataset since they deem it biased.
Accuracy vs. fairness
It was found that 88% of all U.S. mortgage loans in 2019 had information on race, sex, and ethnicity as part of the publicly accessible Home Mortgage Disclosure Act dataset. They constructed a machine-learning model to forecast loan acceptances and rejections using DualFair to “de-bias” the entire dataset and smaller datasets for six states.
The fairness of forecasts improved, although accuracy remained high, after using DualFair. Only one sensitive feature may be measured using an existing metric known as the average odds difference.
A new fairness indicator termed the “alternative world index,” was developed to account for prejudice resulting from various sensitive qualities and choices. This measure showed that DualFair improved fairness in forecasts while retaining high accuracy in four of the six states.
To be accurate, you have to give up on fairness; to be fair, accuracy must be sacrificed. Khan adds, “We demonstrate that we can make progress on narrowing that disparity.”
In the future, the researchers want to apply their technique to datasets capturing health care results, vehicle insurance premiums, or job applications to remove bias. As a result, they propose to fix some of DualFair’s shortcomings, notably its instability, when there are limited quantities of data with several important qualities and choices.
However, experts are optimistic that their findings may one day positively influence reducing lending prejudice and other forms of discrimination.
