From Houston, Texas, the story of a 17-year-old kid who called a rival school from a school bus and threatened to open fire (isn't that a right granted in the Texas constitution anyway?), only to be sentenced to 8 years in prison for terrorism. No word on the boy's skin color, but I've got my private theory.
The school is fine with it, saying, "We now live in a time where safety is of paramount concern." Apparently civil rights, common sense, and just plain human decency aren't.
I am a hardcore libertarian, but the tone of your response is wrong. My civil rights include the right of strong response when someone threatens me. Common sense states that free speech or making allowences stop when someone makes a threat of an attack. If a person says they are going to shoot me, I have the right to immediately respond, using physical force or firearms. I am expected to restrain myself short of that threat. Both the law and common sense make a distinction between verbal harrassment and threats. However, you are correct in that the punishment was too harsh ASSUMING IT WAS HIS FIRST OFFENSE.
So as a hardcore libertarian, you're prepared to say that trash talk between high schools should be considered -- and prosecuted as -- terrorism.
I find this incoherent.
